Seven new construction apprentices have started this week (4 August) with Incommunities – they include four female trainees ranging from 17 to 44 years old.
They are 18 year old Nusayba Sulaymann and Dawn Ayres (44) who have joined as plumbing apprentices; Lee Christie (17), Jamie Firth (17) and John Fawcett (16) who will train as electricians; and Natalie Cusack (17) and Lisa Kaye (32) who will train as painting and joinery apprentices.
The new starters will gain valuable experience working with experienced tradesmen from buildingservices and propertysolutions services on day-to-day repairs, home refurbishments and adaptations. One day a week they will attend college to work towards NVQ construction qualifications in their particular trade area.
Delroy Beverley, Director of Incommunities – propertysolutions, said: “We are delighted with the calibre of our latest apprentices. This demonstrates our commitment as a major employer to invest in talented people from across all communities and assists in addressing areas of under-representation such as among women and BME groups.
“We received over 300 applications for just seven places which reflects the organisation’s reputation as a leading construction ‘player’ and our proactive campaign to promote our apprenticeship programme in local schools.”
Greg Robinson, Director of Incommunities – buildingservices, said: “Apprenticeships are at the heart of our business and we welcome this latest group of recruits.
“Incommunities is delivering a massive regeneration programme and handles over 80,000 repairs a year. It means each apprentice will benefit from a diverse and high quality training programme combining work-based experience and college learning. I wish them all the best as they embark on their new careers.”
The new apprentices were recruited with the help of local training bodies, City Training Services and YouthBuild.
It takes the number of modern construction apprentices with Incommunities to 29. They cover plumbing, joinery, plastering, electrical work, painting and decorating and masonry.
